What is Goodyear welt shoes?
Goodyear Welted construction get its strength, durability and repair qualities by stitching the upper leather, lining leather and welt (a specially prepared piece of leather) to the ribbing that has already been bonded to the insole. The welt is then stitched to the leather or rubber sole.
All Sureway shoes are made by using the traditional Goodyear Welted construction .This technique, invented by the American Charles Goodyear Jr.
What is Goodyear welt made of?
A Goodyear welt is used to attach the upper part of a boot to the sole. The welt can be leather, plastic (PVC) and/or rubber. First, the upper is sewn to the welt, and then the welt gets sewn to the sole.
How to make Goodyear welt shoes?
A Goodyear welt is a method of shoe construction that involves stitching the upper, the insole, and the welt together to create a sturdy and durable shoe. Here are the basic steps to make a Goodyear welt:
Cut the upper leather: The upper leather is the part of the shoe that covers the foot. It is cut into the desired shape using a pattern or a last, which is a three-dimensional form that replicates the shape of a foot.
Stitch the upper leather: The upper leather is stitched together using a sewing machine or by hand. This creates the basic structure of the shoe.
Lasting: The shoe is then placed on a last, which is a wooden or plastic mold that replicates the shape of a foot. The upper leather is then stretched and shaped over the last and secured with tacks or adhesive.
Sewing the welt: The welt is a strip of leather that is sewn to the upper leather and the insole. This creates a channel that will hold the sole in place. The welt is sewn using a special machine called a Goodyear welt machine.
Attaching the sole: The sole is then attached to the welt using adhesive or stitching. The sole can be made of leather, rubber, or other materials depending on the shoe’s design and intended use.
Finishing: The shoe is then finished with various treatments such as polishing, staining, or waxing.
The Goodyear welt construction is known for its durability and flexibility, and it allows the shoe to be resoled multiple times, extending its life span. However, it is a labor-intensive process that requires skilled craftsmen and specialized machinery.

The essence of the Goodyear Welt construction is that the upper is molded on the last and secured by sewing a strip of leather or "welt" over the upper and insole. The cavity formed by the welt is then filled with a natural cork mixture that is highly flexible and elastic, giving the welt shoe its unique comfort. In addition to providing insulation, the cork component optimizes comfort when placing the foot by creating a footprint, making the shoe highly abrasive and durable.
